Kopanang

Current status

In late 2017, HSC acquired the Kopanang mine from AngloGold Ashanti Limited. The mine operates at depths of 1,350 to 2,240 metres below surface, and is accessed by the largest diameter shaft in South Africa. Around 3,000 people currently work at the mine.

  • total mineral resource: 3.3 million oz @ 13g/t
  • current ore reserve: 0.7 million oz

In the future

Immediate recapitalisation has been planned for Kopanang. Key tasks are to stabilise the production rate and to increase crew efficiencies. The availability of the ore reserve is crucial for advancing mining flexibility, as is maintaining development.

A study to optimise current mining operations has been planned. Significant investment is being considered in order to extend the life of mine. Production is planned to reach 110,000 oz per annum by 2019.
